CHARADES: GIMME THE FUNK [ASKER REMIX]

Charades were a disco/funk studio project by Lotti Golden and R.Alexander. Can’t tell you anything about R.Alexander but Lotti Golden is an American singer-songwriter, poet, journalist, artist, and a cult icon of the late 1960s. In the early 1980s Lotti Golden transitioned from artist to writer/record producer, becoming a major progenitor of electro and early hip hop. “Gimme The Funk” was a not very successful disco funk title when it was released in 1983.
French producer Asker remixed the tune a year ago, and gave it a nice little update. I’m sure that “Gimme The Funk” finds some new friends that way.

JANELLE MONÁE: TIGHTROPE [OLIVER NELSON REMIX]

I am a huge fan of Janelle Monáe‘s music, and I am always glad when I discover a remix or edit which keeps the fun. That happens unluckily not so much. Swedish producer Oliver Nelson adds to Janelle Monáe‘s “The ArchAndroid”-lead single “Tightrope” some French funk blood and nu disco elements. Tune in and enjoy!

ROB BASE & DJ E-Z ROCK: IT TAKES TWO [DJ PRINCE 2012 DISCO MIX]

Disco remix by Norway’s DJ Prince of “It Takes Two”, a song by American hiphop artists Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock from 1988 that was later certified platinum. The song samples heavily from Lyn Collins‘ 1972 song “Think [About It]”.

FLEETWOOD MAC: EVERYWHERE [DJ SERG RE-EDIT]

“Everywhere” is a single originally from 1988 released by the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac from their album “Tango In The Night”, written and with lead vocals by Christine McVie. The original tune received recently some new attention after a feature in an advert for UK mobile phone provider 3.
DJ Serg from Stuttgart [Germany] gives this tune a very diverting nu disco feel. His re-edit is exclusively available from the excellent Keep∞Real website. The “Creative Sandbox” [self-definition] is definitely worth a visit.

MICHAEL JACKSON: DON’T STOP ‘TIL YOU GET ENOUGH [CITY ELEGANCE RE-EDIT]

“Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”, released in 1979, was the first solo recording over which Michael Jackson had creative control. This edit is now creatively controlled by the japanese producer duo City Elegance from Tokyo.
Japan was always a good place for Michael Jackson and his music. Angel Sakurai and Hiroshi Tamamushi, the guys behind City Elegance, keep the King of Pop alive. They infiltrated their own punk spirits in this freaky disco edit, making it totally wicked but not daft. This is mainly a dj tool, but a very useful tool.
You’ll love it or hate it. I like it.

DONNA SUMMER: BAD GIRL [DYNAMIQUE REMIX]

It’s not impossible to find a breath of fresh air between all those very similar sounding Donna Summer reworks on soundcloud: The remix of “Bad Girl” by Elliot Hebert aka Dynamique is not another simple 4-2-the floor version of this classic disco tune. The bassdrum in his version is struck very lightly so that it’s often more felt instead of heard. The sound as a whole is extremely open, very wide and somehow spacy – even in smaller rooms.
Yes, this is intelligent made dance music. Take it and enjoy!

DRA’MAN: 0% CREAM TONIGHT [KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND VS GZA VS WU-TANG]

It’s hard to imagine that the gangster hip hopper Wu-Tang Clan and the disco band KC & The Sunshine Band are waiting in front of the same airport toilet. Would it be a moment of peace and unity? Would KC give up his place in the line for GZA?
French mashup producer DRA’man surely doesn’t know the answers but he can give us a little hint how these guys fit together: His “0% Cream Tonight” connects KC & The Sunshine Band‘s 1975 hit “Get Down Tonight” [acapella, samples], with the raps of Wu-Tang Clan‘s “Cream” and Wu’s GZA beats for “0% Finance”. This is good party fun!

RADIOHEAD: CREEP [IRREGULAR DISCO WORKERS SHAMELESS EDIT]

It took me a few listens before I really got into this and it is best played loud. Thom Yorke‘s voice and Jonny Greenwood‘s guitar play are the main ingredients in Radiohead‘s most famous song, “Creep”. No surprise that these two elements play the biggest role in this driving elektro dancefloor remix by Italy’s Irregular Disco Workers.
For me listening to “Creep” is something fine again.
Give it a try.

LIPPS INC: FUNKYTOWN [BOOM LE CHOC EDIT]

whitman b&w lipps, inc

Did you know that Lipps Inc., the band that brought us “Funkytown” in 1979, came from Minneapolis? Yes, Minneapolis. The hometown of funk king Prince [Read again: I don’t wrote ‘fu*king Prince’, my dear friend!]
I listened to a tons of remixes and edits of “Funkytown” within the last weeks and most of them don’t have much interesting to offer. It was very disappointing. But the german party collective Boom Le Choc from Hamburg can save the song from being played on oldie radio channels only. This edit is fresh and funky in and out of town!

GOSSIP VS THE EMOTIONS: MANGLED HEART [IAMXL MASHUP REMIX]

This mashup received some attention when it was originally released in the summer of 2009. Canadian producer Iamxl mashed the disco rockers Gossip featuring their incredible stage animal Beth Ditto with the 70’s disco soul formation The Emotions. An unusual combination that works perfectly.
