ROY AYERS: EVERYBODY IS GREEN & GOLD [DJ BUTCHER MASHUP]

Yes, this is really a mashup. Greek producer DJ Butcher is a well-known name in the field of edited and remixed jazz, funk, nu disco and electro; a guy with several own labels [Our Records, Our Samples, Chopshop Music and Undercover Operations] mashed two tunes by the American funk, soul, and jazz composer and vibraphone player Roy Ayers: “Everybody”, taken from his 1983 album “Lots Of Love” and “Green And Gold”, a gem from the 2003 released album “Virgin Ubiquity” with tunes originally recorded between 1976 and 1981.
Yes, this mashup is really funky, jazzy and sexy. A very respectful rework of Roy Ayers‘ genius. Don’t expect anything less.

NINA SIMONE: FEELING GOOD [TROUBLEMAKER REMIX]

STANLEY CLARKE: YESTERDAY PRINCESS [B.G. BAARREGAARD VERSION]

Something really wonderful for the last hours of the year: A re-work of the great “Yesterday Princess” by Stanley Clarke. Icelandic producer B.G. Baarregaard added to the awesome bassline by Stanley Clarke a warm, dreamy and gentle beat plus lots more of brilliant sounding moments and effects. This remix is… the hope for a better tomorrow!

JOHNNY HAMMOND: LOS CONQUISTADORES CHOCOLATES [DIMITRI FROM PARIS SUPER JIZZO BRAKES]

Johnny Hammond was an American soul jazz and hard bop organist [died in 1997]. He influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who’ve followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable “Los Conquistadores Chocolates” is one of his best releases.
This wonderful remix by Dimitri From Paris was published in Japan and is now worldwide available through the amazing Sounds Of The 70s blogspot.

QUINCY JONES FEAT. JAY-Z & LIL’ WAYNE: SUMMER IN BROOKLYN [COOKIN SOUL REMIX]

Jay-Z? Lil’ Wayne? Nah!!!
Stop! Don’t click away right now. The main problem with most mainstream rappers is that you know them only in their Top Of The Pops chart outfits. But Cookin Soul, an award collecting Spanish producer duo from Valencia known separately as Big Size and Zock, gave Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne the best possible musical background sound: Quincy Jones.
“Summer In Brooklyn” is a smooth jazz hiphop hybrid. A tune that reflects the Brooklyn vibe perfectly.
Produced in 2010, remains wonderful in 2013.

MC LYTE & GEORGE BENSON: COLD ROCK THE PARTY [DILATED CHOONZ MASHUP]

I spent another lonely night at another jazz bar. I ordered another last drink. And then suddenly… that tune! MC Lyte rapping over George Benson‘s music. I raised my head. I went home. I had to find this song.
Here it is: “Cold Rock The Party” by Dilated Choonz. A dream. Not a nightmare. I will never need another last drink.
Download? Visit the Dilated Choonz weblog.
Btw… I never ordered another last drink at another jazz bar before.

CRUSADERS: MY LADY [TODD TERJE TANGOTERJE EDIT]

A formidable funk jazz edit by Norwegian DJ and producer Todd Terje of “My Lady” by The Crusaders, originally released in 1979 on their wonderful “Street Life” album.
This tune circulated already on a limited vinyl release in 2010 [“Rekutts Vol. 1”] which is now a hard-to-find collectable. Click the play button and you’ll understand.
Big thanks to the great Sounds Of The 70s blogspot which made this gem available again.

HUBERT LAWS: FAMILY [FLORENT F GENTLE EDIT]

Sunday is family day. A perfect day for an edit of Hubert Laws“Family”, a beautiful jazz classic that’s reminiscent of the big band era, because not only does it have all the elements of the big band style, it also has the perfect lead & background vocals done by his little sister, Debra Laws.
Florent F, a music lover from Tokyo, fixed the tempo and gave the original a few gentle edits.
From time to time presents Florent F the download button for this edit on soundcloud, so start following him if you can’t grab this brilliant mix directly.

LEEDM101: CRAZY RABBIT [SEAL VS UNKLE VS THE DOORS VS MILES DAVIS]

A dark and very impressive mashup by a british producer known as LeeDM101. He took the LSD defending vocals of Seal‘s “Crazy” and added them to UNKLE‘s beats of “Rabbit In Your Headlights” [another LSD reference]. Then he takes it up a notch by layering in the keyboards and rhythm section from The Doors“Break on Through”. As you surely know The Doors were named after a book by Aldous Huxley [“The Doors of Perception”], which popularized LSD usage.
In the 2nd half of the tune jazz musician Miles Davis joins the gang with a weird trumpet solo. His connection to LSD? No idea but Google offers you more than 6.000.000 results for a search with “Miles Davis and LSD”. Whatever that means.
Find below a mashup video to this tune by Tim B./Instamatic. He mixed the related videos by Seal and UNKLE with the LSD exploitation movies The Trip and Psych Out and gave this musical trip an appropiate optic.

DUKE ELLINGTON: IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD [GEORG CONRAD REMIX]

DukeEllington

And now something unusual: Cologne based producer Georg Conrad remixed [or covered?] a jazz standard by Duke Ellington. The result: a gentle late night tune. Produced for a concert series named “Tripclubbing”, organized by the Kölner Philharmoniker.
Wish I could listen to more from this event.
File under: touching.

LONNIE LISTON SMITH: EXPANSIONS [DANNY MASSURE EDIT]

When “Expansions” by the spiritual jazz pianist Lonnie Liston Smith was released in 1975 on the Flying Dutchman label it bridged with its funky groove the gap between jazz music and the underground dancefloor during the mid-70’s.
Danny Massure from Los Angeles produced this edit in 2011. He changed the song’s intro and outro and added a bit more thrust for the digital age. Voilà!

AMIN PAYNE: GEORGE BENSON TRIBUTE

A while ago I heard someone saying: “Music contains always an own colour. Prince‘s music was in his ‘Purple Rain’/’Sign Of The Times’ era definitely purple. And George Benson‘s releases are ivory because his music is based on purity, clarity and dignity. That’s one reason why his music is not only good. It’s beautiful music.”
It was my own voice saying that. But I can’t remember the when and where. I guess it’s better that I can’t remember the circumstances surrounding these words. Please don’t think that I am an esoteric punk but sometimes the kid’s third eye acts crazy.
Amin Payne, a smooth hiphop and future funk beatmaker living in Melbourne, added on his “George Benson Tribute” album another spot of colour to the guitar virtuoso’s sound: The dark yellow of a sunset.
When I discovered the first two snippets from this release on soundcloud I felt delighted. The complete thirteen track album, released few days ago, doesn’t disappoints a second. Amin Payne used samples from various time slots in George Benson‘s career and created around the soul, the jazz and the funk his own audio painting with live played instruments and hiphop percussions.
I personally don’t want to begin my day with this kind of music. But I am sure that this release can play a good part on an evening that creates one of those rare moments that will be etched in my memory forever.
The complete “George Benson Tribute” album is available for a free download on Amin Payne‘s bandcamp site. Alternatively you can send him all your money and start your life from zero with some excellent tunes on your player.
