JIMI HENDRIX BAND OF GYPSYS: WHO KNOWS [SUONHO RAW-DUB]

This is a subtractive rework of the epic nine a half minute long original recording performed live by Jimi Hendrix & The Band Of Gypsys on December 31, in 1969, which was included on the “Band of Gypsys” album the next year. Suonho, a much travelling italian dj and producer, focused his retouch on the powerful bassline and Buddy Miles‘ crazy scat singing, added another rhythm section and echoes of dub. An essential edit!

GRATEFUL DEAD: DARK STAR [KALEIDOSCOPE JUKEBOX REBUILD]

This is not a remix or edit or an original tune, this is a proper cover version of Grateful Dead‘s psychedelic “Dark Star” rock song from 1968. Cover artist Kaleidoscope Jukebox has a very unique sound when he creates music: The American musician rebuilt this rock classic with lazy beats, bagpipes, sitars and a new feeling for old Woodstock emotions. Press play and listen. Press play and watch.

JIMI HENDRIX VS KATE NASH: MAGIC SPANISH SOUP [DRA’MAN MASHUP]

French mashup genius DRA’man connects good ole’ Jimi Hendrix‘s “Magic Spanish Castle” [acapella, guitar] and Kate Nash‘s “Pumpkin Soup” [instrumental].
Most of DRA’man‘s mashups are brilliant, absolutely refreshing and far from being stupid. Check this one out.
If you want to get more of this stuff listen to “The DRA’ Experience”, a 12-track-tribute-album by DRA’man dedicated to the music of Jimi Hendrix.

BOB DYLAN: SHE BELONGS TO ME [ROSA LUX BELONGS EDIT]

Danish dj and producer Rosa Lux with a smooth and very charming remix of Bob Dylan‘s “She Belongs To Me” from the 1965 album “Bringing It All Back Home”.
Additional percussions and upbeat electronics create an unknown atmosphere for Bob Dylan‘s music. For me it was a very unusual listening experience in the first moments but then it growed on me. In the middle of the tune I was already completely convinced.

FLEETWOOD MAC: EVERYWHERE [DJ SERG RE-EDIT]

“Everywhere” is a single originally from 1988 released by the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac from their album “Tango In The Night”, written and with lead vocals by Christine McVie. The original tune received recently some new attention after a feature in an advert for UK mobile phone provider 3.
DJ Serg from Stuttgart [Germany] gives this tune a very diverting nu disco feel. His re-edit is exclusively available from the excellent Keep∞Real website. The “Creative Sandbox” [self-definition] is definitely worth a visit.

QUEEN: WE WILL ROCK YOU [WICK-IT THE INSTIGATOR REMIX]

Even as a non-regular follower of this blog you probably noticed already that I am absolutely not a fan of edits, remixes and mashups which begging for exactly one reaction: “Har! Har! Funny!”.
I prefer a respectful usage of the originals. I like it when producers take the spirit of a song and beam it from the yesterday into today’s life. Or when they can add a relevant aspect with their own context.
Wick-it The Instigator from Nashville is very successful with his remixes and mashups. His soundcloud account, one of the top 200 most active pages on the entire site, has garnered nearly 40,000 followers and 6,000,000 plays. Wick-it The Instigator landed at #5 on Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart and has a highly interactive online fan base [sometimes 500+ facebook Fans added per week and sometimes 5,000+ people “talking about him” on facebook]. In 2012, Microsoft recognized that direct audience connection and chose Wick-it The Instigator to produce a song for its Windows 8/Angry Birds: Star Wars commercial that was channeled to millions of prime-time viewers.
But still… lots of his works doesn’t work for me. It’s “Har! Har! Funny!” only. I can’t blame him for that because it seems that he can spent his live with what he’s doing. I am respecting that a lot. But I am not one of his die-hard followers.
Needless to say that they are a few wonderful expections in his back catalogue that walk on the thin line between nonsense and brilliance: His remix of Queen‘s stadium rock anthem “We Will Rock You” is one of those surprises. It’s one of his older works that he uploaded to soundcloud in 2010. It mixes the energy of the original with a heavy hiphop beat and amazing piano chords.
This is samplemania at it’s best. Check it out even when I wouldn’t present you most of Wick-it The Instigator‘s other works.

BETTY DAVIS: YOU WON’T SEE ME IN THE MORNING [JACK FROST EDIT]

Countless bands these days would love to sound like Betty Davis in this Jack Frost edit.
This previously unreleased track from the reissue of the 1973 debut album from Miles Davis‘ ex-wife [whom he claimed was “too young and wild” for him] is every bit as funky and freaky as you’d imagine.
If you missed the original post please check also Jack Frost‘s cool edit of Sly & The Family Stone‘s “I Ain’t Got Nobody” which the 3rd Eye Kid [that’s me!] posted a while ago.

GOSSIP VS THE EMOTIONS: MANGLED HEART [IAMXL MASHUP REMIX]

This mashup received some attention when it was originally released in the summer of 2009. Canadian producer Iamxl mashed the disco rockers Gossip featuring their incredible stage animal Beth Ditto with the 70’s disco soul formation The Emotions. An unusual combination that works perfectly.
Download? If you really want this tune then check the Subservient Experiment blog. They probably can help you out.
